WILLIAM O. NEWELL
Tupelo - WILLIAM O. NEWELL, 84, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at his residence. A long time resident of Tupelo, he was born in Marietta October 16, 1921 to the late Jessie Lee and Ethel Grammer Newell. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II and also served in Korea. He worked at Tupelo Manufacturing and Krueger International from which he retired in 1991. He was an avid vegetable gardener and lawn keeper and enjoyed sharing his personal time and produce with family, neighbors, and friends. Hunting, fishing, and wood carving were also favorite past times.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2006 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Bert Harper and Rev. Don Trammel officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include wife of 42 years, Erma Brooks Newell of Tupelo; three daughters, Pam Bowman and husband, Jim, of Tupelo, Vicky Porter of Belden, and Cindy Gaines of Tupelo; one son, Ed Shaffer of West Frankfort, IL; four grandsons, Michael Bowman and wife, Angelica, of Tupelo, Adam Wade Bowman of Tupelo, Matt Lavender of Tupelo, and Colter Shaffer of Edwardsville, IL.; one sister, Wanda Campbell and husband Gaylon, of Decatur, MS; four brothers, Malone Newell and wife, Jacquilla, of Mantachie, Evone Newell and wife, Bobbie, of Belmont, Elton Newell and wife, Marilyn, of Boaz, Ala. and James Newell and wife, Polly, of Fulton; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Newell of Marietta and Bobbye Newell of Decatur; special friends and neighbors, Gary, Martha, and Lorianna Blake of Tupelo.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Elvis, Otis, Lavayne, and Gene Newell; a sister, Mavis Goddard.
Pallbearers will be Michael Bowman, Adam Bowman, Colter Shaffer and Matt Lavender.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
