William “Smokey” Freeman

Saltillo- William Laverne “Smokey” Freeman, 84, died Monday, July 8, 2019 at his residence surrounded by family. He was born in Como, September 10, 1934 to William Henry and Virgie Pauline McAlister Freeman and was a graduate of Como High School. In June of 1960, he married Mary Elizabeth Palmer and together they shared 53 years until her death in 2014. Smokey worked for 34 years at MidSouth Packers until they closed and then retired after 10 years, from Stone Container. He loved spending time with his family and was lovingly referred to as “Moke Moke” by his granddaughter with whom he shared a special relationship. He was a long-time faithful member of Saltillo First United Methodist Church where he and his wife proudly served custodians after his retirement.

Survivors include his daughter; Angela Crafton and her husband, Terry of Saltillo; son, Eric Freeman and his wife, Marie of Albertville, Alabama; granddaughter, Lexie Crafton of Saltillo; sister-in-law, Ann Palmer of Saltillo; nephew, Jeffrey Freeman of Northport, Alabama; and very special friends and caregivers, Pat Ferguson of Tupelo and Mary Cathcart of Mooreville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth Palmer Freeman; two brothers, Fredrick Freeman and Tommy Lee Freeman; two brothers-in-law, John Palmer and Gatlin Palmer; and niece, Katherine Freeman.

Visitation will be 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Saltillo First United Methodist Church.

Services honoring his life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Saltillo First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Green officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Mike Irwin, Bobby Crouch, Ronnie Dunaway, Tommy “Dodlar” Smith, Jimmy White and Wess Westmoreland.
