William C. Carpenter

June 17, 1926 — March 3, 2009

Mooreville - William C. "Sumner" Carpenter, 82, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A Grenada County native, he was born June 17, 1926, to W.S. and Annie B. Lyle Carpenter. He grew up in Bruce. Before graduating high school he served in the U.S. Navy, on the battleship, USS Pennsylvania, during World War II. After the war he finished school, married Frances McIntosh Carpenter and they made their home in Mooreville. He worked as a route salesman for Cockrell Banana Company where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Earlier in life, he enjoyed quail hunting and fishing. He was a longtime and dedicated member of Boguefala Baptist Church where he had served along with his wife as treasurer since 1965, and was an active member of the Brotherhood. He also gladly gave his time in maintaining the upkeep of the church building and grounds.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Boguefala Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Wilson and Rev. David Perry officiating. Burial will be in Boguefala Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years, Frances M. Carpenter, of Mooreville; one son, David Carpenter and wife, Jane, of Flora; one sister, Marie Payne of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Earnest L. (Leroy) Carpenter of Amarillo, Tex.; two grandchildren, Gage Jones, of Brandon and Cliff Jones and wife, Casey, of Nashville; numerous nieces and nephews .

Pallbearers will be Gage Jones, Cliff Jones, Eric Carpenter, Tim Mitchell, Dean Dempsy, and Bo Payne

Honorary Pallbearers will be Milford Justice, Max Berryhill, Willie Schumpert, Bobby Richey and members of the Brotherhood of Boguefala Baptist Church.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and will continue Friday one hour prior to service time at the church.
