Tupelo- William Carl “Bill” Long, 68, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born December 6, 1950, to Carl Vernon and Elizabeth Wiygul Long. He was a lifelong resident of East Tupelo, and lately at the Laney House at Traceway Retirement Community Greenhouses. Mr. Long attended Lawhon School and was a 1968 graduate of Tupelo High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at Mississippi State University. Mr. Long retired as a police officer with the City of Tupelo and had been awarded Officer of the Year. He loved reading law mysteries, working with computers before computers were cool, and following MSU sports. Mr. Long was a life-long member of Tupelo Free Will Baptist Church where he taught the Junior Boys Sunday School Class for many years.
He is survived by one sister, Julia Elizabeth Long Puckett of Amory; three nieces, Ashlee (Billy) Cash of Mesa, Arizona, Emilee Puckett of Nashville, Tennessee, and Laura (Jake) Evans of San Diego, California; and four great nieces and nephews, Ella Grace Cash, Ricky Vade Cash, Anna Kate Cash, and Cooper William Cash, all of Mesa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl V. Long and Elizabeth W. Long; and his
brother-in-law, Ricky Lee Puckett.
Visitation will be 5 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2019, in Tupelo Memorial Park with Rev. Terry Pierce officiating. W.E. Pegues is in charge of the arrangements.
