Welton "Ray" Slayton

Saltillo –Welton Ray Slayton, 73, died Wednesday, January 29, 2019 at the North Mississippi Medical Center. On July 25, 1945, he was born to Huston Elmo Slayton and Angie Dell Eakes in Rio, Mississippi. He grew up in Michigan where he met the love of his life, Deborah Jean Reynolds, who he married 44 years ago. He proudly served in the Vietnam War in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. Ray and Deborah relocated to Tupelo with their family in 1994. He was the founder of Slayton’s Concrete Construction in Saltillo. Some of his favorite hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing golf, visiting the casinos, and watching Ole Miss football. Ray was a man of many friends, who never met a stranger and children adored being around him. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be greatly missed. He was a member of Beech Springs Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Deborah Jean Slayton, five daughters, Margaret Loveland of Michigan; Rene Bowden (Sed) of Saltillo, Kimberly Painter (Matt) of Saltillo, Jennifer Weatherford of Saltillo and Redah Cleveland of Guntown; brother, Ed Slayton (Grace) of Michigan; grandchildren, Christina, Dillon and Felicia Clark, Cody Hudson, Nicholas and Ashley Rheaume, Thomas, Joseph and Michael Painter, Lexi and Dakota Wren, Kolby, Ally, Trey, Kyle, Kailey and Hannah Cleveland; 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Huston Slayton and Angie Eakes; one sister; two brothers; his son, Ray Lynn Slayton; and two son-in-laws, Josh Weatherford and Shawn Cleveland.

Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019 at W.E. Pegues, Saltillo.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues. W.E. Pegues Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Painter, Nicholas Rheaume, Dillon Clark, Joseph Painter, Kolby Cleveland, Michael Painter, Kyle Cleveland, and Dakota Wren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Matthew Painter, Sed Bowden, Orlando Castrejon and Tommy Franks.

Services will be live streamed and recorded for those who may not be able to attend at www.peguesfuneralhome.com .
