Shannon - Walter Edward Collins, 85, died Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Sanctuary Hospice House. A native and life-long resident of Shannon, he was born April 18, 1933, to Walter Allen and Lola Collins. In 1951, he graduated from Shannon High School and attended both the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University. In 1989, he retired after a long and stellar career in Civil Service where he served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War and full time in the Mississippi National Guard before working as a rural mail carrier on Route 2 in Shannon for over 30 years. He also worked at Penn Tire for a short period of time. For a number of years, he served as Fire Chief of the Shannon Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid golfer and bird hunter. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Shannon.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Collins and his wife, Lisa of Shannon and Joe Collins and his wife, Christi of Baldwyn; four grandchildren, Brooke Bentley and her husband, Greg of Arkadelphia, AR, Mandy Ragon and her husband, Kyle of Shannon, Cason Collins and Jana-Claire Collins of Baldwyn; and one great-grandson, Ross Ragon of Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife of 61 years, Sue Camp Collins who died May 8, 2017.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services honoring his life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Ken Anderson and Rev. Jerry Estes officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Cason Collins, Ed Priest, Tom Camp, Joe Camp, Greg Bentley, Kyle Ragon, Gary Joe Collins and Matt Scott.
