Virginia Nichols
Saltillo- Virginia Sue Smothers Nichols at the age of 87 died Thursday, January 5, 2023, at her home in Saltillo. She was born in Lee County on June 11, 1935 to Robert Smothers and Vicki Rogers Smothers. She grew up in Mantachie, and at a young age, she received the nickname “dinner bell”. Virginia worked for 17 years at Lucky Star in Baldwin before retiring from Guntown Slacks. Being a mother of seven she had an unmatched work ethic. She is of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and yard work.
Virginia leaves behind seven children, Betty Hampton of Saltillo, Earl Edge and his wife, Connie, of Guntown, Carolyn Edge of Guntown, Robert Edge and his wife, Brenda, of Guntown, Michael Edge of Guntown, Lisa Taylor and her husband, David, of Saltillo, and Teresa Phillips and her husband, Kenny, of Pontotoc; 14 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Prentiss Edge, John Martin, and David Nichols; four grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Smothers, Charles Smothers, and Billy Joe Smothers; and one sister, Alta Brazel.
Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. until service time Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Pegues, Saltillo.
Services honoring Virginia’s life will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the Saltillo Chapel of Pegues with Rev. Sammy Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Stephens Cemetery in Mantachie.
