Pontotoc- Virginia Hutcheson Kennedy, 75, died Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at Church Street Personal Care Home in Ecru after an extended illness. A Union County native, she was born March 1, 1933 to the late Wesley Earl and Emmaline Wages Hutcheson. A graduate of Verona High School, she then went on to Itawamba Community College and to the University of Mississippi where she earned her bachelor and masters degrees in education. She taught elementary school at Nettleton and Pontotoc Schools, retiring after 26 years of service. She taught Sunday School for 40 years until her health failed, first at Furrs Baptist Church and later at Temple Baptist Church. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing bingo and listening to bluegrass music.
Memorial Services will be 6 p.m. Friday at Furrs Baptist Church with Bro. Steve Cohea officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie Kennedy; one son, Byron Kennedy and wife, Licia; two grandsons, Reaf Kennedy and wife, Aleatha, and Zachary Kennedy; two great-grandchildren, Connor Bolyard Kennedy and Haley Kennedy, all of Pontotoc; two sisters, Evelyn Clark and husband, Bobby, of Plantersville and Helen Juanita Garner-Hankins and husband, Bud, of Verona; her brother, James Hutcheson of Plantersville; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and the father of her children, Ottis O. Kennedy; her brothers, Leroy Hutcheson and Francis Hutcheson; two sisters, Katherine Lofton and Keron Gattis.
Pallbearers will be her nieces, nephews, and grandsons.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 5 p.m. until service time Friday at the church.
