Viola Buse

Saltillo - Viola Granny Buse, 96, died Thursday, January 15, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born October 17, 1912 in Coleman, S.D. to John and Alice Toates Lee. She was a veteran of World War II from April 1943 until June 1945, serving in the Army as a 1st Lt. Nurse in Africa, Italy, and the United States. Her duties during the war included combat duty at several M.A.S.H. units. She was awarded the European Theater of Operations Service Ribbon and two Bronze Battle Stars. She was retired from North Mississippi Medical Center after 18 years of service and had previously worked as a private duty nurse. She was the widow of Lawrence Buse who died September 3, 1967. She enjoyed crocheting, listening to gospel music, especially Bill Gaither, and was an avid sports fan. She loved watching The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. She was called Granny Buse by the grandchildren she loved so dearly. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Saltillo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Chuck Herring and Dr. Ken Anderson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Saltillo Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty McDaniel, and husband, Allen, of Saltillo; her four sons, David Buse and wife, Marilyn, of Belden, Bill Buse and wife, Margaret, of Thrasher, Robert "Bob" Buse and wife, Rita, of Tupelo, and Charles Michael "Mike" Buse, of Saltillo; 12 grandchildren, Stephanie Chism Turner and husband, Tim, of Saltillo, Stephen Chism and wife, Misty, of Wheeler, Laura Pearson, and husband, Harry, of Birmingham, Ala., Lesley Godown and husband, Trent, of Tupelo, Melanie Woodard and husband, Chris, of Tupelo, Madelyn King and husband John of Shreveport, La., Twana Nicole Fowler and husband, David, of Nettleton, Stephanie VanWinkle and husband, Luke, of Nashville, Barrett Rowsey and wife, Dianna, of Guntown, Kristin Buse of Tupelo, Kim Morrison and husband, Jud, of Birmingham, Ala., and Kevin Buse and wife, Dena, of Saltillo; and 17 great-grandchildren, Brandy and Brandon Byrd, Haylee Hughes, Cole, Madison and Laiken Pearson, Aaron and Kelsey Turner, Hannah and Bryce Godown, Tanner Buse, Annabelle, Preston, William, and Grant Morrison, Zach and Will Fowler

Pallbearers will be Zack Fowler, Kirk Meeks, Doug Thornton, Terry Carlock, Dennis Carlock, and Pete Allen.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
