Vernelle Clark

Tupelo " Vernelle Lindsey Clark, 92, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born November 27, 1916, in Dennis to Thomas Oscar and Naomi Messer Lindsey. A graduate of Tishomingo High School, she then attended Delta State University and Missisippi State College for Women. A resident of Tupelo since 1946, she worked 27 years as a secretary and radio dispatcher for the Mississippi State Highway Department. She was an active member of Gloster Street Church of Christ where she taught Bible classes and was instumental in organizing The Wednesday Friends which served the community in various projects. She also volunteered at Faith Haven and the Good Samaritan Free Clinic. She was the widow of David Edward Clark who died October 19, 1974.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Ministers Chad Ramsey and Joe Connell officiating. Private burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Joyce Clark Swain (Willis) of Tupelo; three grandsons, David Clark (Patsy) of Brandon, Jon Clark of Tupelo, and Chris Clark (Kelly) of Tupelo; one great-grandson, Austin Clark of New Albany; two step-great-grandchildren, Cory Gates of Savannah, Ga. and Tiffany Carr (Brian) of Saltillo; one great-great-granddaughter, Alyssa Gates of Savannah, Ga.; her sister-in-law, Lucy Clark of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, David Edward Clark, Jr. and David Lindsey Clark, Sr.; and two sisters and two brothers.

Pallbearers will be Taylor Clark, David Price, Jim Peden, Clark Price, Larry Humphreys, Floyd Hale

Honorary Pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of Gloster Street Church of Christ.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
