VELNA L. LUTHER, JR.
Nettleton - Velna Lamar Luther, Jr., 86, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 6, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Unit. A Thaxton native, he was born March 3, 1928, to Velna L. and Lucille Bost Luther. He served in the United States Army, during the Occupation of Japan, from 1946 to 1947. He liked to fox hunt, garden and enjoyed spending time outside. He was Baptist by faith. His family loved him and he will be greatly missed.
A celebration of his life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2014, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Phil Wood and Rev. Steve Denton officiating. Burial will be in Blue Mountain Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Reba Sappington Luther of Nettleton; two sisters, Judith Winter of Memphis and Jane Russell (Ray) of Oakland, Tenn; one brother, Jimmy Luther (Frances) of Mantachie; two special nieces and caregivers, Lisa Hester (Delayne) of Nettleton and Carol Robbins (Russell) of Blue Mountain; a host of other nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Kennedy of Nettleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Gladys.
Pallbearers will be Russell Robbins, Jonathan Sappington, Jake Rucker, Delayne Hester, Steve Kennedy and Randy Harmon.
Harry Sappington, Jr. and Delane Denton will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at the funeral home.
