Shannon Varnell McCaleb (Nell) Homan, 85 died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born February 5, 1925, in Mooreville, Mississippi to Claude A. and Willie Lee Eunie Scruggs McCaleb. She was a charter member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ. She was a retired cosmetologist who owned and operated Styles by Nell and co-founded Creations School of Cosmetology. Throughout her long career, her cosmetology chair often served as a place of council, prayer, and opportunity to minister to her faith. She was a born entrepreneur and free spirit who during her long life ventured into many businesses, but she most enjoyed making others look good. She loved people and people loved her for her positive attitude, generous heart and encouraging words. She always saw the glass half full and helped others meet adversity with courage and hope. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors, with Rev. Don Sparks and Rev. Dean Moody officiating. Graveside services will follow at Lee memorial Park.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Elkin Homan (Laura) of Fulton, Andrew Pick Homan (Jessie) of Clinton; three daughters, Linda G. Homan Shelton (Percy) of Columbus, Janice Homan Boone (David) of Shannon, and Lisa Homan Howell (Dillard) of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Jeffrey Bodene Bo McCaleb (Josie) of Tupelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elkin Pick Homan; two brothers, Carl McCaleb and Thomas A. Buddy McCaleb; and one sister Dewdrop McCaleb Cole.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Drew Homan, Clay Homan, Michael Homan, Matthew Homan, Grant Howell, and her nephew Kenny Cole.
Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, April Boone Lamontagne and Lauren Elizabeth Howell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010, and 1 p.m. until service time (2 p.m.) on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
