Valera Paulk
TUPELO - Valera Jenkins Paulk, 103, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Beverly Health Care. She was born Nov. 14, 1902, in Pontotoc County to the late Louis and Corrine Jenkins. She graduated from Wood Junior College and taught in the Palmetto School System for several years before joining the Lee County Department of Public Welfare where she worked for 26 years as a social worker. A longtime member of the Verona Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years. She also served in the capacity of church librarian for some time. She was a strong supporter of the Mississippi Democratic Party and served as a poll worker on a number of occasions. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Jerry East and the Rev. David Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in the Verona Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, James Louis Paulk of Utica; two granddaughters, Amy Davis and Amanda Berg, both of Southaven; four great-grandchildren, Summer Davis, Colin Davis, Richard Berg and Valerie Berg; two sisters, Ora Ferguson of Tupelo and Ruby Waggoner of Elm Mott, Texas; one brother, Grady Jenkins of Los Angeles, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James Ellis Paulk.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Williams and Billy West.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday until service time.
