Unity - Trula Fay Phillips, 81, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at The Meadows in Fulton after a brief Illness. A Lee County native , she was born November 27, 1927 to John and Etta Vena Hill Young. She attended Holmes Junior College on a basketball scholarship before earning her degree in education from Mississippi State University. She was a dedicated teacher in the Mississippi Public Schools for 35 years, retiring from Saltillo. After her teaching career, she worked for TRI Realtors for five years. She was an accomplished oil painter and loved her dog Pork Chop. She was the widow of Hoyle Brandon Phillips who preceded her in death Jan. 5, 2001. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she delighted in the time she spent with her family. She was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church.
Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Eddie Boutwell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Kornegay (Glenwood) of Ft. Worth, Tex.; her son, Hoyle (Sonny) Phillips, Jr. (Dianne) of Guntown; her sister, Corine Green (Charles) of Beech Springs Community; three grandchildren, Brad Phillips (Lane) of Starkville, Brian Phillips and fiance, (Kasey) of Unity, and Krisha McCoy (Kevin) of Swampscott, MA; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Phillips, Mia Fay McCoy and Chase McCoy.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
