Newton Tommy L. Thompson, Jr., 86, died Friday, March 19, 2010. A native of Vidalia , GA, and longtime resident of Newton. Tommy served as an Army Air Force B29 navigator in the Pacific Theater in WWII. After graduating from the University of Georgia he worked for Kraft Foods, living in Newton from 1949-1953. He moved to Newton permanently in 1961 to become partner in McClendon Cheese Co, Fords Ice Cream, and Newton Feeder Service. Tommy was an avid gardener and enthusiastically involved with the Newton United Methodist Church, The Boy Scouts of America, Lions Club, and Habitat for Humanity. In 2006, he was named Newton Record Citizen of The Year.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Madeline Lanier Thompson; sons Tommy (Penny) and Lanier (Jarie); grandchildren Gracie Menetre (Bailey) and Laura, Jesse, Ruddy, and Jack Thompson; great-grandson, George Menetre; brother Ed Thompson of Menlo, GA, and many well-loved nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Family visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 at the Newton United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newton United Methodist Church.
