Tommy C. Meek

Southaven - TOMMY C. MEEK, 84, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at his residence in Southaven. A native of the Jerico Community, he was born November 17, 1923 to the late Tyson Claude and Callie Bell Meek. He was retired E-9 with the United States Navy after 25 years of service. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict. While in the service, he was a recipient of two Good Conduct Medals, the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and China, United Nations, National Defense, and Korean Service Medals. He was recognized in 1991 for his service spanning the entire length of the Cold War. He and his family together have over 100 years of combined military service. He was formerly of Tupelo and had also lived a number of years in Germantown, Tennessee. While living in Tupelo, he was a tool and die maker with Rockwell International where he retired after 15 years. He enjoyed playing golf, collecting coins and stamps and he also enjoyed collecting antiques with his wife. He loved caring for his pet cat, Brutus. He was a member of the American Legion Forty and Eight, the Tupelo V.F.W., the Fleet Reserve and the American Rifle Assoication. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Holly Springs.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Buddy Rushing and The Right Rev. Bruce McMillen officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Beech Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Freda H. Meek of Southaven; one daughter, Catherine Carter of Southaven; one son, Alan Meek and his wife, Jeanne, of Plantersville; two grandaughters, Callie Henderson of Starkville and Caroline Carter of Southaven; two grandsons, Tyson Meek of Pontotoc and Aaron Meek of Plantersville; one sister, Frances Hill and her husband, Robert, of Memphis; two brothers, Roy C. Meek and his wife, Grace, of Baldwyn, and Dennis M. Meek and his wife, Betty, of Baldwyn; a sister-in-law, Sarah Meek of Galloway, Tennesee; and his extended family including numerous nieces and nephews..

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl Fred Meek, Charles Esque Meek, and Melvin C. Meek and his wife Marsha; one sister, Mable Morgan and her husband, Irvin.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2008.
