Thomas A. Monaghan, Sr.

June 24, 1926 — April 30, 2011

Tupelo - Thomas A. Monaghan, Sr., 84, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. He was born June 24, 1926 in Gunnison to Robert H. and Lois Christian Monaghan. He married Margie Sheffield on June 28, 1947. He worked for Singer Sewing Machine Company and Hunter Sadler Manufacturing of Tupelo and retired as a rural mail carrier. He was a United States Army veteran and served in Germany during World War II. He was a long-time active member of Parkway Baptist Church. He was a VFW member, and avid Mississippi State sports fan and loved to hunt and fish.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Paul Brashier, Rev. Trevor Davis and Dalton Davis officiating. Burial will be in Dorsey Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margie Sheffield Monaghan, of Tupelo; one son, Tom Monaghan (Sharon) of Starkville; one daughter, Debbie Henley (David) of Olive Branch; four grandchildren, Mark Monaghan (Melanie) of Pearl, Kelly Gray (Ryan) of Hoover, AL, Angie Davis (Trevor) of Olive Branch and Mandy Wright (Shane) of Olive Branch; 10 great grandchildren, Maggie and Milla Monaghan, Cameron, Linley and Emery Gray, Dalton, Griffin and Evan Davis and Alex and Addie Wright; one sister, Joann Chism of Pontotoc; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy Monaghan and Lois and W. G. Tucker; one brother, Jimmy Monaghan.

Pallbearers will be Mark Monaghan, Ryan Gray, Shane Wright, Horace Wadlington,
F. G. Wiygul, David Reese, Arthur Roy Reed and Don Sheffield.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Sheffield, Joe Sheffield, Nolan Owen and Kevin Tackitt.

Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2011 at the funeral home.
