TENSE STANFORD Pontotoc - Hortense Lee "Tense" Stanford, 88, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Graceland Care Center after an extended illness. She was born in the Ratliff Community on October 16, 1925, to Edward and Ada Rose Hogue Farrar. She was a graduate of Unity High School. Her interests included fishing, singing and playing the guitar, and "making music" for local nursing homes. She especially loved to sing with Doug Hill at the nursing homes. She was a member of Brewer Baptist Church. A great mother and Christian lady, she will be greatly missed by her family. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Mark McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Brewer Cemetery. Survivors include her five children, Wanda Shouse (Bill) of Wheeler; Janalle Purvis (Lawton) of Newman, Georgia, Jerry Stanford (Brenda) of Old Union, Jan Thomas (Jeff) of Meridian and Sherry Johnson (Johnny) of Troy; twenty-four grandchildren; fifty-two great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Janie Breeding of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dudley Stanford in 1994; one daughter, Joann Evans in 2009; two sons-in-law, Mac Evans and Willis Sutphin; one grandchild, Tony Evans in 1979, one great-grandchild, James Swindle in 2009; two brothers, Elvin Farrar and Jay Farrar. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
