Sylvia Pegues

Sylvia Gene Owen Pegues, at 87 years old, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on February 25, 2025, at her home after an extended illness. She was the daughter of William Sims Owen and Mattie Laura Akers born on May 18, 1937. Sylvia is a Tupelo High School graduate and attended Mississippi College. 

After raising her three girls, Sylvia became director of RSVP, later becoming Activity Coordinator for Lee Manor Nursing Home, retiring in 2000. She was active in her community holding offices in Hospital Auxiliary, Jr. Auxiliary, Jr. Women’s Club, Tupelo Christian Women’s Club, Sanctuary Hospice Auxiliary and Mission Mississippi.

Sylvia was a life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday School, as well as VBS, for many years and loved being a member of Piggie Caldwell’s Sunday School class.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherie Eklof and husband Steve, of Kirksville, Missouri, Lisia Cannon and husband Barry, of Mathiston, Mississippi, and Kimberly Pegues of Saltillo; one brother James K. “Pete” Hastert, of Tupelo; one nephew, Jay Hastert and wife Brenda, of Tupelo; two granddaughters, Molly Brown and husband, Dalton, and Abby Ivy and husband, Sam; and four great-grandchildren, Beckett Brown, Lynley Brown, Leighton Ivy, and Ella Ivy.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Leonard M. Pegues; her parents and beloved grandmothers, Estelle “Mamaw” Akers and Pauline “Mama Polly” Morris; aunt, Mary Deane Akers, and one brother, Jesse Hastert.

 Visitation will be 12 p.m. until service time Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Pegues, Tupelo. 

Services honoring her life will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues with Rev. Sam Ivy officiating. Graveside service will follow at Lee Memorial Park. 

Pallbearers will be Steve Eklof, Dalton Brown, Pete Hastert, Barry Cannon, Sam Ivy, and Jay Hastert.
