Suzy Strain
Faytema Jane “Suzy” Treloar Strain, 80, widow of Clark Goodlett Strain, died Friday, September 29, 2023, at Traceway Manor.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at Lee Memorial Park in Verona with Rev. Matt Powell officiating.
Suzy was born November 4, 1942, in Bristol, Connecticut, and grew up in Water Valley, Mississippi. She was a graduate of The University of Mississippi, obtained a Master’s degree in Library Science, and worked as a librarian in the Tupelo Public School District. Suzy was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Tupelo. She also belonged to the National Association of Insurance Women and volunteered with the Women First Resource Center in Tupelo, an organization which supported women with cancer and other health challenges for more than twenty years.
A very talented knitter, a hobby she learned in the 1960s from co-workers at lunch in the teachers' breakroom, Suzy gifted her friends and family with intricate and beautiful afghans. In fact, she was knitting an afghan for a special caretaker at Traceway just prior to her passing. After recovering from breast cancer in her 50s, she began knitting hats, first giving them to patients at the Cancer Center in Tupelo, and then to innumerable others.
Suzy leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Josie Strain and Evan Peacock; her son and daughter-in-law, Gray and Christie Strain; two grandchildren, Kaitlynn Duke and Ali Strain; and three great-grandchildren, Dorothy, Charlie, and Rosemary. Suzy is also survived by two brothers, Jimmy Treloar (Trisha) of Oxford, Jack Treloar (Debbie) of Mantee, and a sister, Jane Gray Benton (Edmond) of The Villages, Florida. Suzy was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-nine years, Clark Strain, and her parents, Buster and Lavonia Treloar.
Memorials may be made to All Saints' Episcopal Church, Attn: Saints' Brew, 608 West Jefferson Street, Tupelo, MS 38804, a ministry very dear to Suzy's heart, which has been serving a hot breakfast to people in need each weekday since 2007.
