Tupelo - Mary Sue Hunter, 93, died Friday, January 21, 2011, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. She was born October 16, 1917, in Dorsey to Robert E. and Clara Thornley Riley. A 1935 graduate of Saltillo High School, she then attended Draughons Business College. She married James M. Hunter of the Cedar Hill Community in north Lee County on April 22, 1939, and worked as a legal secretary until 1943, when she was employed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Following World War II, she and James purchased the Delta Inn Hotel in Sumner which they operated as a Bed and Breakkfast until 1952. In 1953, they moved to Tupelo and began a 30 year career in the restaurant business. Hunter's Restaurant was AAA rated and well known in North Mississippi for its great food. She obtained her realtors license and later her brokers license and formed Hunter Reality in 1983. She worked in the real estate business until retirement in 1995. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. David Eldridge, Dr. John G. Armistead and Father Donald Brice officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include her sons, William Hunter and James Riley Hunter, Sr. (Judy) of Tupelo; two sisters, Dorothy Harwood of St. Louis, Mo. and Barbara Sigafoos of Baldwin, Wisc.; her brother, Robert E. Riley, Jr. of Garner, N.C.; four grandsons, Riley Hunter (Missy), John Hunter, Michael Hunter, Ben Hunter (Kory); her great-grandchildren, Mary Beth Hunter, James Riley Hunter III, and Anna Maria Hunter; and special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents;her husband, James M. Hunter who died April 25, 1962; two brothers, Horace Ray Riley and Aubrey Riley; and her sister, Mildred Cunningham.
Her sons, grandsons, and great-grandson will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
