Auburn - Mary Sue Holder, 73, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born June 30, 1935 in the Ratliff Community to Marshall and Jessie Reynolds Sheffield. In 1955 she graduated from Mantachie High School and married Chester Holder on April 30 of that same year. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and time they spent together. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and other needlecrafts. She was a nine year cancer survivor. Before her health failed she was very active in her church, Auburn Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and singing in the choir. She was known as "Grandmother" to everyone in the community and could always be counted on for her wise words of counsel and encouragement.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Terry Pierce and Rev. Paul Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Chester Holder of Tupelo; two daughters, Patricia Gayle Jones and husband, Newell (Butch) of Tupelo and Mitzi Vaughn and husband, Alan, of Madison, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Williams and wife, Jonna, Amanda Timms and husband, David, Trish Timms and husband, Roger, Mindy Campbell and husband, Mitch, Jeremy McCuller and fiancee, Amber Westmoreland, Tiffany Rock and Zachary (Bub) Rock; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Faye Massey, Janice Webb and husband, Lowell, and Frances Bearden and husband, Gary; five brothers, Bobby Gene Sheffield, Gerald Sheffield and wife, Charlene, Billy Ralph Sheffield and wife, Virginia, David Sheffield and wife, Linda, and Danny Sheffield and wife, Brenda.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sarah Farrar.
Pallbearers will be Phil Holder, Robert Holder, Brad Sheffield, Doug Farrar, Will Webb, Jackie Massey, Alan Sheffield, and Brian Sheffield.
Honorary Pallbearers Sammy Holder, Tommy Kemp, James Kemp, and Randy Massey.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
