Tupelo-- Steve Austin Kelly, 84, passed away early Monday morning, August 7, 2023, at his home in Tupelo. Steve was born July 23, 1939 in Lee County to Woodrow Wilson and Louise Austin Kelly. He was a faithful Christian man who loved his family dearly. He graduated Shannon High School in 1957. Steve spent most of his professional life working in garment factories. He was head sewing machine mechanic at Rosato’s. After his retirement, Steve kept busy with carpentry work and freelancing as a mechanic for other plants. He was an avid collector of knives, key chains, farming equipment, and walking canes.
Steve is survived by his children, Dale Kelly (Ashleigh) of New Albany, Jason Kelly of Mantachie, and Kristy Brassfield (Dewayne) of Troy community; his grandchildren, Megan Berry (Chris), Dylan Kelly, Josh Kelly, Clint Kelly (Cass), Faith Brassfield, and Katie Grooms (Alex); his great-grandchildren, Landon, Haylie, Eli, Jackson, Xander, and Scarlett; his sisters, Shirley Turner and Pat Barber (John) of Tupelo; and a special niece, Lauren Thompson of Myrtle.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; his daughter-in-law, Rhonda; his parents; brother, Ben; sister-in-law, Janie; and brother-in-law, Joe Turner.
Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2023, at East Main Church of Church of Christ.
Services honoring Steve’s life will be 1 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2023 at East Main Church of Christ, with Ministers Robert Kingsley and Barry Kennedy and good friend, Dennis Hallmark officiating. Private family graveside services will be at Mayfield Cemetery. Pegues Funeral Directors has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dylan, Josh, Clint, Landon, Eli; and nephews, Terry and Woody Turner and Bo and Lanny Putt.
