Shirley Russell Maynard

Tupelo - Shirley Russell Maynard, 93, died peacefully at Sanctuary Hospice on January 1, 2019.  On November  15, 1925, she was born to Martha White Lindsey Russell and Dr. George Manuell Russell in Nashville, Tennessee. They later moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she graduated from Miss Hutchinson’s School for Girls in Memphis and attended Southwestern College, formerly known as Rhodes.  In 1946, she married George Fleming Maynard, Jr. of Tupelo where they lived for almost 65 years before he died on March 26, 2011. She was a member of Saint James Catholic Church.

Survivors include her son, George Fleming Maynard, III and his wife Chrissy of Greenville, South Carolina; her grandson, George Fleming (Bo) Maynard, IV, of Memphis, Tennessee; her granddaughter-in-law, Jessica Morris Maynard and two great-grandchildren, Luke Carter Maynard and Sophie Belle Maynard of Orlando, Florida; her brother, George Manuell (Smoky) Russell and his wife Carolyn of Memphis, Tennesse; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. George Manuall Russell and Martha White Lindsey Russell; her sister, Katherine Russell Stoddard of Memphis; and her younger grandson, Benjamin Hoyle Maynard of Orlando, Florida.

The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Henry Shelton, Father Tim Murphy and Father Joseph Le officiating.  W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Family visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Church. The funeral will be followed by a luncheon and reception in Shelton Hall, adjoining the Church.  A private graveside service will be held in Glenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, P.O. Box 2711, Tupelo, MS 38803 and/or to Traceway Methodist Senior Services at 2800 West Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38801.
