Shirley Lumpkin Goodman

Shirley Lumpkin Goodman, 82, died Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the Hospice Unit of North Mississippi Medical Center. The daughter of Former Lt. Governor Samuel Edgerton Lumpkin and Shirley Steverson Lumpkin, she was born in Tupelo October 31, 1935. She attended St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee in the ninth grade and graduated from Tupelo High School in 1953. She attended Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri from 1953 until 1954, when she transferred to The University of Mississippi and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1958. While at Ole Miss, she was a member of Delta Gamma Social Sorority and Phi Gamma Nu Honorary Sorority.

She represented Tupelo as Lady of the Realm in the 1954 Memphis Cotton Carnival and made her debut with the Mississippi Debutante Club, Inc. in 1956 in Jackson.

Mrs. Goodman was a member of the Hernando De Soto Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, the Mississippi Division of the Magna Charta Dames, the Mississippi Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor, Daughters of the Confederacy and Real Great Granddaughters of the Confederacy.

Shirley was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church. She was an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Nativity since 1964.

Survivors include daughter-in-law, Tish Bowie Goodman; granddaughter, Abbey McCullough Goodman; cousins, Bea Corbitt of Knoxville, Tennessee, Steve Corbitt (Mindy) of Nashville, Tennessee, Jay Corbitt (Jan) of Knoxville and their children, Tyler and Abby; and long-time friends and care givers, Carla Felts and Martin Dillard.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 57 years, Herbert "Ray" Goodman; an infant daughter, Anne Goodman; and her son, Paul Lumpkin Goodman.

Services honoring her life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at All Saints' Episcopal Church with The Right Reverend Duncan M. Gray, III officiating. Graveside services will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Poland, Albert White, Billy Walton, Frank Anger, Tom Robinson, Reed Hillen and Hudson Bryan.
