MEMPHISSarah Emily Kersh Newman, 72, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006 at The Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Miss. after a lengthy illness. She was born in Brandon Miss. on September 17, 1933 to the late John Eugene and Eva Lindsey Kersh. In 1951, she graduated from Brandon High School and then received a B.S. in Music from Belhaven College, graduating Cum Laude. While at Belhaven, she was the soprano soloist for First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. She later earned a Masters in Education from the University of Memphis. She taught in the Memphis City School System for over 36 years and earned the Career Ladder III designation. She was an outstanding singer, who in 1958 sang the role of Tosca in Opera Memphis first full production of that opera. It was a great success and she received rave reviews. In addition to other operas, she also performed at Front Street Theater in several musical productions. She received her greatest pleasure from singing church music. She was a soprano soloist for Calvary Episcopal Church and most notably at First Baptist Church where she sang for thirty-four years. She will be remembered for her solo performances in The Messiah, Elijah, The Brahams Requiem and many Christmas oratorios. She was active in church and Sunday school at First Baptist and most recently at Trinity Baptist.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 28 at Trinity Baptist Church, 8899 Trinity Road, Cordova, Tenn. with Dr. Richard Hipps officiating.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Robinson Vernon Newman, Jr.; a daughter, Evanne Newman of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Robinson Vernon Newman, III and wife, Lorraine Montgomery Newman of Slidell, La.; two granddaughters, Alexandra Sarah Newman and Stella Mary Anne Newman of Slidell, La.; a sister, Eva Gene Kersh Christian of Clinton, Miss.; a brother-in-law, William Pippin Newman and wife, Bess Small Newman of College Station, Tex.; a special cousin, Dorothy Jean Kenna Brasfield of Edwards, Miss; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Kersh, Lindsey and Newman families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Eugene "Buddy Kersh, Jr.

Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the church.
