SARAH JANE HARDIN GOUGH Tupelo - Sarah Jane Hardin Gough died Tuesday Morning, November 10, 2015 at the Simerson House, Greenhouse at Traceway after a lengthy illness. She was born in Tupelo to Jane and Edwin (Pat) Hardin and lived there until she moved to Sheffield, Alabama. Her mother was later married to Stockton Cooke, Jr. of Sheffield, Alabama. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and later the University of Mississippi. She returned to live in Tupelo in the early years of her marriage. Sarah was very active in the community and in her church. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oxford. She served as a Girl Scout leader for five years. Many of her girls attained the status of First Class and God and Community, equal to Eagle Scouts and God and Country in Boy Scouts. She was also a leader for her sons' Cub Scout Troup. She was a Life Member of Junior Auxiliary having served as an officer and chairman of many of the major projects. Sarah was a charter member of Tupelo Country Club Ladies Golf Association and a charter member of Tupelo Duplicate Bridge Club. She was a Bronze Life Master, a teacher, and Director of bridge. She worked a number of years at Trace Inn serving as Sales Coordinator and was a member of Tupelo Professional Women's Club. Sarah was known for her love of people and had many friends, especially bridge friends. She most recently held the position of House Mother for Kappa Sigma Fraternity. She was named Outstanding House Mother of the year by the Order of Omega in 2004. In 2008 she was named Lifetime Sweetheart' by the Delta Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. She was also, House Mother for Mother Mu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is survived by her son, Phillip Gough (Julie); two granddaughters, Molly and Ally Gough; a grandson, Jarrett Watson (Kayla); great-grandchildren, Lilly, Nealey, and Case Watson; and brother, Stockton Cooke, III of Texas. Visitation will be 4 until 6 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2015 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo. A mass will be held directly after visitation at 6 p.m. for friends and family with Father Seth Walley, "one of her boys" officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Hardin Family plot in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice or to Palmer Home for Children, 912 11th Ave. S., Columbus, Mississippi, 39701. Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.peguesfuneralhome.com .
