Sara Adams Burnett

November 30, 1915 — January 29, 2011

Tupelo - Sara was born on November 30, 1915 in Chesterville, Mississippi to Andrew Clark and Annie Carruth Adams. Her childhood was spent in Belden, Mississippi where she was educated in her elementary years and then graduated from Tupelo High School. After high school she attended MSCW and then the University of Mississippi where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority. At the W she was Maid of Honor in Miss Pohls Freshman Jr. Wedding.

After college she worked at the Peoples Bank & Trust Company in Tupelo and on March 18, 1938 she married David Silas (Cy) Burnett. She and Cy made their first home at the Hotel Tupelo where he was manager and later at The Rex Plaza (later Sheraton Rex Plaza) where he was owner and manager. After retirement they made trips abroad and many trips to visit their grandchildren.

Sara was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was among the organizers of The Wesley Fellowship Class. Her civic activities included Gray Lady at the community hospital, Cub Scout Leader, member of the Tupelo Garden Club and the X Club. Her hobbies were bridge, golf, knitting and needlepoint. She made one of the needlepoint kneelers at her church.

Services will be 12 Noon Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Andy Ray officiating. A reception will follow immediately after the service. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her two sons, David Silas Burnett Jr. and wife Linda of Santa Clarita, CA; J. Clark Burnett and wife Corlea of Memphis, TN; her sister Jane Adams Reid of Charlottesville, Virginia (now living in Charlotte, NC); her grandchildren, Sam W. Burnett who is now in Quang Zhou China, Catherine Casey Hendricks and husband David of Charleston, SC, David Michael Burnett currently attending Springfield College in Massachusetts and Benjamin Adams Burnett, currently a graduate student at UCLA in California; her sister-in-law Camille Adams Hutton and her special friend Virginia Spight.

During her later years she was attended by many loving caregivers including Martha Ann Stewart, Betty McLarty, Robin Kelly and Diana Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cy Burnett; her parents; one brother, Thomas Carruth Adams.

Pallbearers will be Lindsey Leake, Pete Poland, Jim Burnett, Tommy Adams, Don Stewart and Wilson Long.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Rudolph Franks, Paul Eason, Fred Strange and Dr. Eugene Murphey.

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until service time Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in the gathering room at the church.
