Verona - SAMUEL ROBERT SAM MARTIN, 82, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. An Oakland, Tenn. native, he was born January 17, 1926, to the late John Davis and Esther May Howery Martin. He was raised in Oakland and Galloway, Tenn. For many years, he worked as a service station mechanic. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines and later joined the Seabees. A skillful handyman, he will be remembered for his "gift of gab." He enjoyed fishing, taking care of his pet cats and especially loved to travel. He was a Baptist
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Sammy Lansdell officiating. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery.
Survivors include his daughter, Sheila Noble and husband, Don, of Baldwyn; three sons, Danny Martin and wife Shirley, William Martin and wife, Judy, and Michael Martin, all of Guntown; five sisters, Jewel Martis, Jessie Briscoe, and Frances Barnett, all of Saltillo, Carolyn Tarrents of Mineappolis, MN, and Christine Loucks of Shelton, IL; one brother, John H. Martin of Saltillo; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marsena (Joy) Hankins and Carol Borders.
Visitation will be noon until service time Friday at the Saltillo Funeral Home.
