Ruth Umfress

RUTH UMFRESS Mooreville- Johnnie Ruth Umfress, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Monday, October 21, 2013. She was born in Lee County on December 26, 1915, to the late John and Earle Duncan and was a graduate of Draughn's Business College in Memphis. She had lived in Mooreville until approximately four years ago when she moved to Traceway Manor. Ruth had a passion and zeal for working and was the first female manager for United Cities Gas Company in Tupelo. After the company relocated, Ruth worked with the Lee County School Systems until the age of 88. Also she enjoyed working weekends at the Tupelo Flea Market selling baseball cards and Fenton Glass. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Ruth was the oldest living member at Boguefala Baptist Church where she devoted her time as the church Sunday school secretary for over forty years. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Boguefela Baptist Church with Rev. David Perry and Rev. Royce Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Boguefala Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is entrusted with arrangements. Survivors include three children, Lynda Umfress of Georgetown, Kentucky, Pat Rizzio of Tupelo, Nelda Umfress of West Point; one sister, Betty Taylor of Mooreville. She was preceded in death by her husband McGee; parents, John and Earle Duncan; two brothers, Will Hoyle Duncan and Trice Duncan. Pallbearers will be John Duncan, Sam Taylor, Ken Dillard, Rusty Cummings, Jackie Massey and James Carnathan. Visitation will be 4- 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the funeral home and will continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
