Clermont, Fla.--Roy Thomas "Tom" OShields, 69, died Monday, August 10, 2009, at the Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, Florida. He was born February 21, 1940, in Tupelo, Mississippi to Enoch L. and Mary Jean OShields. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a veteran of the U. S. Army Reserve. He retired from Trustmark National Bank as an executive vice president in January, 2003. He was a graduate of The Midsouth School Of Banking, The School of Banking Of The South and The National Installment Lending School. A staunch supporter of the University of Southern Mississippi, he served as an alumni District Committeeman, on the USM Alumni Association Board of Directors and was a Lifetime Commitment Member of the USM Alumni Association. His civic accomplishments include having served as president of the Bruce, Mississippi Lions Club, member of the Columbus, Mississippi Kiwanis Club, member of the Columbus, Mississippi Chamber of Commerce, president of the Calhoun Academy and Columbus Christian school boards, campaign chairman of Bruce and Calhoun County United Way, campaign chairman of Lowndes County United Way and president of the board of directors of Lowndes County United Way. His first and foremost commitment was to his Lord. In that commitment, he served as a deacon and as an elder in the Columbus Church of Christ in Columbus, Mississippi. He was a member of the Church of Christ of West Orange in Winter Garden, Florida.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Brother Max Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia Starnes OShields, one daughter, Shannon O'Shields Shelton, and two grandchildren, Brett and Chandler Shelton, all of Clermont, Florida. He is also survived by one sister, Jennie Boone (Howard) of Tupelo, Mississippi, one brother, Wayne OShields (Ramona) of Memphis, Tennessee, three nieces, one nephew, seven great nephews, one great niece and two great great nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, and brother, John H. OShields.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
