ROBERT "ROOSTER" MCWHIRTER Saltillo - Robert N. "Rooster" McWhirter, 75, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, at the Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born April 8, 1939, in Chickasaw County to Robert Mitchell and Shirley Irene Naron McWhirter. For over six years he worked for the Tupelo Police Department and was one of the first motorcylce policemen in Tupelo. He then went on to serve on the Memphis Police Department for fourteen years before moving back to Tupelo open and operate Tri-County Auto. He was a 32 degree mason with the Saltillo Lodge and a member of Sherman Church of Christ. He loved his family dearly and cherished time spent with them. A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Bobby Holland officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife of thirty-three years, Cathey McWhirter of the Birmingham Ridge Community; two children, Robbi Roach of Guntown and Mitch McWhirter (Laura) of Saltillo; one step-son, Brad Harlow (Christy) of Saltillo; nine grandchildren, Christy Dye of Tupelo, Kelsey Roach, Mason Tanner and Cason Tanner all of Guntown, Gabby McWhirter, Tatum McWhiter, John Colton McWhirter, Hunter Harlow and Caitlyn Harlow all of Saltillo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Pallbearers will be Bob Chrestman, Tim May, Roger May, David May, Hunter Harlow, Rex Haygood, Van McWhirter and Walter "Buck" Parker. Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the funeral home.
