Tupelo--Robert Preston “R.P.” Owings passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Rosewood Residence after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. He was born September 30, 1930 in Nettleton to Vandiver M. Owings and Clyde Springer Owings. R.P. proudly served his country in the Army National Guard’s 198th Tank Battalion during the Korean War. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Patricia, and they enjoyed 63 years together. Shortly after his military service, he began his longtime career as a life insurance agent which he immensely enjoyed primarily because of his love of meeting people. R.P. was a dedicated member of South Green Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for many years. Earlier in life, he enjoyed riding motorcycles. R.P. dearly loved his family and cherished moments they spent together.
He leaves behind his daughter, Lisa Cozart and her husband, Terryl, of Tupelo; five grandchildren, April Gallagher and her husband, Brandon, Austin, Tyler, Parker, and Connor Cozart; his niece, Betty Hall; his nephew, Tommy Owings; his best friend, Bill Langford; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vandiver and Clyde Owings; his wife, Patricia; an infant daughter, Stacey; a sister, Gladys Hester; and two brothers, Doug Owings and Hazel Owings.
Visitation will be 4 until 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Pegues, Tupelo. A graveside service celebrating R.P. 's life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Nettleton with Rev. Guyton Hinds officiating. Family and friends will meet at Pegues Funeral Directors at 10 a.m. Thursday and travel in procession.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Austin, Tyler Parker, and Connor Cozart, his grandson-in-law, Brandon Gallagher, and his son-in-law, Terryl Cozart.
