Robert Greenwood, 96, died Friday, February 22, 2008, at The Village at Germantown, Germantown, TN. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, he attended Bentley School of Finance, George Washington University, and worked for the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, DC. While in Washington, he met and married Ruth Hurt from Tupelo, MS. They were married for 62 years until her death in 2004. Mr. Greenwood served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in Chatham, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Guam. Following the war, they moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he was a tax specialist for the Internal Revenue Service, and later, the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Upon retiring, they moved to Tupelo, MS in 1978 where they lived until 1999. Due to health concerns they relocated first to Lexington, KY and then Memphis, TN to be closer to their daughter, Alice.

Services will be at 11:00 Monday, February 25, in Tupelo, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors with Dr. Randy Von Kanel officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Tupelo. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at W.E. Pegues Monday prior to the service. Mr. Greenwood was a member of First Baptist Church, Tupelo, MS.

Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and daughter Sally Woollen formerly of Dunwoody, GA. Survivors are Alice Hurley and husband, Douglas Hurley, of Germantown, TN, and grandson, William Woollen of Dunwoody, GA.
