Dr. Robert Dale Sr.
TUPELO - Dr. Robert Alexander Dale Sr., 85, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1920, in Paris, Tenn., to the late Ivan Hall and Bertha Robinson Dale. As a young man, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He then attended Murray State University, was an undergraduate of the University of Tennessee and received his medical degree from the U.T. Medical School. While at U.T. he became a member of the A.T.O. Fraternity. He served his country as a major in the Army Medical Corp. He was a longtime and much loved pediatrician in Tupelo and received the "Golden Tongue Blade Award," (Doctor of the Year at North Mississippi Medical Center) in 1987. He also served as a past Chief of Staff for North Mississippi Medical Center in 1962. He served on the Board of Directors for Faith Haven Inc. for many years and also volunteered at the Good Samaritan Clinic. As a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, he served on the Vestry. He was an accomplished artist and poet, an avid reader and enjoyed playing golf, the piano and organ.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at All Saints Episcopal Church with the Rev. Shannon Johnston and the Rev. Gene Asbury officiating. Burial will be at Lee Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel DeShong Dale of Tupelo; two daughters, Lynn Dale Waddle and husband, Steve, of Baldwyn, and Jan Dale Nichols and husband, Les, of LaGrange, Ga.; one son, Dr. Robert A. Dale Jr. and wife, Martha, of Tupelo; one stepdaughter, Judy DeShong of Tupelo; one brother, Arlon H. Dale and wife, Christine, of Sebring, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mary-Margaret Dale of San Francisco, Calif., Susan Dale Connell and husband, Paul, of Daphne, Ala., Clint Neely and wife, Summer, of The Woodlands, Texas, Kate Neely of Scooba, Laura Nichols and Claire Nichols, both of LaGrange, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Gracyn Neely and Hannah Neely, both of The Woodlands, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Kathryn Wyatt Dale, on July 4,1968.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Charles "Smokey" Young, Bernard Hufft, Glen McCullough Jr., Pete Poland III, Bob Moore, Brad Butler, John Tomlinson and Pete McMurray.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Walter Bourland, Dr. William Hilbun, Bill Rieves, Billy West, Walton Cooper and Tom Barnett.
