Palmetto - Richard Franklin Meggs, 47, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009, in Hamilton, Ala. after a sudden illness. He was born June 18, 1961 in Tupelo to Gene and Maggie Evelyn Davis Meggs. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in1979 and then attended Itawamba Community College and The University of Mississippi. After high school he joined the Mississippi Army National Guard. He was a truck driver for Capital Bedding for a number of year and a bus driver for the Lee County Schools where he was very involved in the school district booster clubs. He enjoyed hunting, auto body work, cooking, and was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. He loved his children and was known as a faithful and dedicated father. He attended Chesterville Baptist Church.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. J.C. Burks and Dr. George Forbes officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include one daughter, Amanda Lynn Meggs Scruggs; two sons, Richard Brandon Meggs and Blake Gene Meggs, all of Palmetto; two sisters, Sylvia Jean Meggs Palmer of Tupelo and Linda Carol Meggs Gill of Aberdeen; one brother, Michael Hugh "Mickey" Meggs and wife, Terri, of Columbus; four grandchildren, Austin Lee Scruggs, Adrienne Marie Scruggs, Avery Wayne Scruggs, Aydan Claire Scruggs, all of Palmetto, and their father, Jerry Wayne Scruggs of Saltillo; 5 nieces and nephews; 5 great-nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Sandra Morris and Regina Ellsworth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Robyn Renee Simmons Meggs who died December 18, 1994.
Pallbearers will be Austin Scruggs, Jonathan Hastings, David "D.J." Box, Jr, Cole Hoskins, Albert McShan, and Chris Smith.
Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the funeral home.
