Richard Gatlin

August 16, 1935 — July 27, 2023

Tupelo-- Richard L. Gatlin, 87, went to meet his Lord and Savior July 27, 2023, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

Richard was originally from Myrtle. After graduating high school, Richard enlisted in the Air Force, serving for 3 years including a tour in Labrador. Post enlistment, he attended Mississippi State University and then began a life-long career as a surveyor and draftsman, first with the State of Mississippi Department of Transportation and then with the United States Soil Conservation Service.

Richard was also a faithful, long-time member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in east Tupelo, serving in many roles, as needed by the Church and congregation.

A revered “Mr. Fix-It,” Richard loved the challenge of making, repairing, and repurposing all manner of equipment and devices. In particular, he was fond of making and sharpening knives for friends and family.

Richard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeffie L. Gatlin (née Wright), his two sons and one daughter, and their families. In addition, Richard is survived by his long-time hunting partner, friend, and brother-in-law “Blue” Logan and Blue’s wife Sue, (Jeffie’s sister).

Richard was preceded in death by by his parents, Marvin and Velma Gatlin; and his sister, Elizabeth McClure.

Visitation will be 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Pegues, Tupelo.

Services honoring Richard’s life will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at his beloved St. Mark United Methodist Church with Minister Roger Puhr officiating. Interment will be at Mount Liberty Church Cemetery, near Water Valley.

In lieu of flowers, Richard’s family asks that memorials be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, P.O. Box 2177, Tupelo, MS 38803.
