Phyllis Harper

October 6, 1933 — February 12, 2009

TUPELO " Phyllis Hawkins Harper, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in the Fawn Grove community Oct. 6, 1933, to Edward Clinton Hawkins and Mittie Lou Leslie Hawkins. She was a feature writer and columnist at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was an art teacher and carver.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tom Groome and the Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson officiating. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements

Survivors include five daughters, Lynn (Bud) Nelson of Tupelo; Laurie (Eddie) High of Wren; Leslie Geoghegan of Tupelo; Bethanne Ellzey of Starkville; and Linda (Carlton) Witherspoon of Belden; one son, Jamie (Tabatha) Harper of Tupelo; three sisters, Jane (Mike) Talbert of Eupora; Laurie Teague of Tupelo; and Ellen Hawkins of Columbia; one brother, Royce (Billie) Hawkins of Mooreville; 16 grandchildren, Jennifer Nelson, Jessica Nelson, Amanda Moore, Kimberly Ayers, Jamie Geoghegan, Sarah Harper, Connor Harper, John Harper, Cooper Harper, Maddie Ragland, Christopher Ellzey, Samantha Ellsey, Candice Antwine, DeVaughn Witherspoon, Brandice Witherspoon and Joshua Witherspoon; and a host of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.

Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church from 1 until 5 p.m. Saturday and one hour before the service Sunday.
