PEARLINE TUCKER SMOTHERS Tupelo - Annie Pearline Tucker Smothers, 95, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015, at the Green Houses At Traceway. She was born in Pontotoc County on April 4, 1919 to Eldridge Morton and Leather Valine Archer Tucker and was a 1937 graduate of Tupelo High School with distinction in business. She married Doyle Rice Smothers on November 16, 1938 and they were married for 69 years until his passing in 2008. During her working career she worked for attorney, Samuel E. Lumpkin; "Josh" Whitesides, President of People's Bank; attorneys, Marshall Adams and Sam Long; A. B. Friend, engineer for Lafayette County Board at the time of construction of the Sardis Dam; Larry Allen, President of Central Services Association; bookkeeper for Northeast Mississippi Community Hospital (presently NMMC); Harrisburg Baptist Church as the church's first secretary; and concluded her working career as a free-lance court reporter and as the official court reporter for Judge James Bost in Pontotoc County. She was an avid gardener who really enjoyed the beauty of her azaleas and caladiums and was very active in the Magnolia Garden Club, the Altrusa Club and the Thursday Culture Club. She was a faithful supporter of Faith Haven Shelter Home for Children and active member of Parkway Baptist Church, serving in many capacities in the Sunday School department, WMU and music ministries. She was a strong supporter of the family unit and really enjoyed her time with her family and grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2015, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Matt Scopel officiating with special music by Randy Wood and Judy Williams. A graveside service will follow at Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include sons, William D. Smothers (Karen) and David L. Smothers (Jennifer) both of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Alecia McMath (Michael), Kara Penny (Douglas), Mary Stewart (John) all of Tupelo, Dr. Brian Smothers (Dr. Melissa Smothers) of Wauwatosa, WI and Joseph Smothers (Kristen) of Tupelo; six great-grandchildren, Anna Grace and Peyton McMath, Will Penny, Tucker Stewart, Judah and Bennett Smothers; sister, Dorothy Glynn Scallorn of Batesville; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Rice Smothers; her great-grandson, Jonathan Andrew Douglas Penny; and her parents. Pallbearers will be Joseph Smothers, Dr. Brian Smothers, John Stewart, Doug Penny, Johnny Tucker and Ross Scallorn. Visitation will be 12 - 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo. Memorials may be made to Parkway Baptist Church, 1302 Lee Street, Tupelo, MS 38804 or to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 W. Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38801.
