Tupelo - Opal Garner Chittom, 93, died Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born in Lee County October 31, 1915, the first child of Lewis E. and Miley P. Garner. She was married to Aubrey Harmon Chittom on January 12, 1935. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education at what was then Mississippi State College in Starkville. She began her teaching career at Mantachie School when she was 19 years of age. She continued her career in the Lee County and Tupelo School Districts for more than 30 years. Upon her retirement she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada and abroad.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at East Main Church of Christ with Ministers Gary Williams and Darrell Beard officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Jean Smith (Bob H.) of Tupelo and Janice McKinney (Robert E.) of Fulton; three grandchildren, Robert Earl McKinney (Brandi) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Leonard Bedna Schaefer, III (Melissa) of Tupelo, and Alice McKinney Henton (Nathan) of Oxford; her great-granddaughter, Miley Opal Henton of Oxford; her three sisters, Roberta Garner Davis (C.B.) of Memphis, Dois Smith (James Lee) and Laverne Garner Dearman, all of Tupelo; nieces and nephews, William Louis Dearman (Charlotte) of Tupelo, Terry Garner Dearman (Karen) of Saltillo, Julia Dearman Wood (Ewing) of Dorsey, Janet Dearman Byrge (Jerry) of Helenwood, Tenn., Fay DeVaughn Wood (Bill), Larry Murphy Chittom (Marilyn), Martha Kirksey Senter (Pat, Jr.), all of Tupelo, Richard Brooks Archibald (Marsha) of Saltillo, Ann DeVaughn Moore (Nolan) of Dorsey, Charles Chittom (June) of Tulsa, Okla., and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Arvy Garner; her brother, Clyde Roland Garner; and her nephew, David Owen Dearman.
Pallbearers will be Richard Archibald, Larry Chittom, Jason Dickinson Eric Gibens, Kenny King, Matthew Nichols, Jonathan Nichols, and Eddie Simmons.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the deacons and elders of East Main Church of Christ.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
