Cottontown, Tenn. - Onis Mitchell Opiela, 76, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Skyline Madison Campus Hospital in Madison, Tenn. after an extended illness. A native of Mooreville, she was born October 24, 1931, to the late M.C. and Ollie Parker Mitchell. In1949, she graduated from Mooreville High School and then went on to Mississippi State University where she graduated with a degree in education. She was a retired school teacher, and a loving and dedicated wife and mother who enjoyed dancing, singing, and playing the piano.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. John Newson and the Rev. Jack Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of more than 50 years, Archie Opiela of Cottontown, Tenn.; her daughter, Leigh Sheffield and husband, James of Cottontown, Tenn; her two sons, John Opiela and wife, Peggy, of Berwick, La. and Joseph Opiela of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Philip Vetrano, III and Hayley Opiela; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Eula Mitchell Moore and three brothers, J.E. "Bill" Mitchell, Omri Mitchell, and Aubrey Mitchell.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Jimmy Mitchell, Mike Mitchell, Rodney Moore, Danny Mitchell, Steve Mitchell, and Jeff Mitchell. Kenneth Mitchell will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy, 468 CR 1650, Mooreville,MS.
