Hilton Head Island, SC--Olivia Jewel Sudduth, 93, died April 23, 2009, at her retirement home in Hilton Head Island, SC after a brief illness. The daughter of William Johnson and Georgia Erin Lowry Sims, she was born in Pontotoc, MS on November 30, 1915 and attended Pontotoc elementary, middle, and high schools. She graduated from what is now Delta State University and began a career as a home economics teacher at the Tupelo High School in 1945. She was married for 62 years to Navy physician, Herschel Cochran Sudduth. She taught Sunday school and bible study at the Bethesda Presbyterian and Fourth Presbyterian churches while residing in Maryland. She enjoyed music, was an avid reader and taught classes in dress design and tailoring. She and her husband traveled extensively touring the Far East, Europe and the Middle East.
A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the White Zion Presbyterian Church in Pontotoc, Mississippi. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her son David (Bonnie) of Hilton Head Island, SC; and two grandchildren, Erin of Raleigh, NC and Christian of Cockeysville, MD.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Robert Lawrence Larry Sudduth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
