Sherman - Nora Lee Gaines McBrayer, 85, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Golden Living Center in Tupelo. She was born in Pontotoc County on April 21, 1928, to Reuben and Mary Caldwell Gaines. She was married on February 10, 1945, to Merle McBrayer, who died in 1983.



She was a longtime resident of Sherman community until her health failed. She moved to Golden Living Center in Tupelo in August 2009. She was member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery for years. She also enjoyed her Sunday School Class until she was unable to attend. She especially enjoyed watching and listening to the Gaithers gospel videos and the Sunday morning preachers on television.



She was an accomplished seamstress, working 26 years for Joyner-Fields in Sherman. She also sewed and did alterations for the public. She made many wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses. She was a Mother, Mamaw, Mamaw Wee, Granny, Sister and a Sister-in-law to many people. She was the last living sibling of her family.



Services will be 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Bro. Wayne Gullet and Bro. Terry Faulkner officiating. A private graveside service will follow in the Union Cemetery North West of Belden.



Survivors include her son, Stanley McBrayer (Dianne) of Pontotoc; her daughter, Cathy Mayo (Steve) of Sherman; a son-in-law, Jerry Raines (Lawanda) of Pontotoc; four grandsons, Stephen McBrayer (Crystal), Patrick McBrayer (Christi), Jeremy Raines (Amber) and Bradley Mayo (Anna); two granddaughters, Angie McDonald (Keith) and Amanda Todd (Jason); seven great-grandchildren, that were the love of her life, Bailey and Brooke McBrayer, Kaylie and Caroline Mayo, Zach and Averie Todd and Aubree Raines; and many other children she kept through the years which called her Mamaw.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Brenda McBrayer and Judy Raines; seven brothers, Raymond, Floyce, Bryon, Lester, Samuel, Robert and Charles Gaines; two sisters Ella Bernice Gaines and Eula Mae Farrar.



Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Stephen McBrayer, Patrick McBrayer, Jeremy Raines, Bradley Mayo, Keith McDonald and Jason Todd.



Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
