NORA BROOKS CALLAWAY
Tupelo - Nora Lucille Brooks Callaway, 89, was born Christmas day, 1927, and passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, in Tupelo, with family by her side.
Born in Shirley, Arkansas, to James and Naomi Reid Brooks, the family moved to West Texas when Nora was three. After graduating from Bradshaw High School, she attended business college in Abilene and worked as an accountant for the Abilene Reporter News. Then she married the love of her life and best friend, Rev. Gilbert Callaway, November 23, 1949. In her role as a Baptist preacher's wife, helpmate, Sunday school teacher, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend, she lived happily in many Texas towns, including Fort Worth, Avoca, Trent, Southmayd, Wylie, Lewisville, and McKinney.
Nora worked at Leightner Electronics in McKinney for almost 20 years and was an active member of the McKinney Quilt Guild and the Golden Heirs class at First Baptist, McKinney. Nora was a great friend to many and always one of the first in a group to welcome newcomers. She enjoyed entertaining and loved her Texas 42 and Quilt Guild buddies.
In 2011, Nora moved to Tupelo to be close to family and joined Calvary Baptist Church. She also enjoyed senior adult fellowship at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Nora was active making bowls for the Salvation Army's Empty Bowl Project.
She is survived by her three daughters, Connie Atkins (Don), Carla Falkner (Pat), and Kelly Callaway (Matt Malcolm); four grandchildren, Andy Atkins (Ashley), Rebekah Falkner (Nate Ezell), Anna Falkner (Austin Walton), and Mark Atkins (Emily Brown) and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Gilbert Callaway; five brothers and two sisters.
