Nellie R. Houston

July 1, 1929 — March 12, 2018

Nellie Rue Houston, 88, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 12, 2018, at Countrywood Manor in Mantachie with her family and friends by her side. She was born July 1, 1929 in Itawamba County to the late Willie and Mildred Bennett. In her early school years, she attended Houston Community School where she played basketball. She later moved to Tupelo and was a 1948 graduate of Milam High School. Nellie had worked at Savings Oil Company and had also worked with her sister-in-law at Joyland Nursery before retiring. For the rest of her years, she was a homemaker and stay at home mother. Nellie enjoyed life and loved all her church family and friends. She really enjoyed being around her family and was always willing to help anyone who needed her. She was a life-long member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church.



Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Neal C. Houston; one son, Tim Houston and his wife, Hazel of Saltillo; two grandsons, Rick Houston and his wife, Felicia and Randell Houston both of Saltillo; four great-grandchildren, Ricky Houston, Jon Jon Houston, Paige Houston all of Saltillo, and Sean Houston of Corpus Chirsti, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; Surue McCoy and Avernelle Savage; and two brothers, Leeroy Bennett and Clyde Bennnett.



Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors, Tupelo.



Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Donnie Riley and Rev. Truman Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.



Pallbearers will be Rick Houston, Randell Houston, Ed Houston, John Wigginton, Ricky Houston, Jon Jon Houston and Sean Houston.



Memorials may be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1328 Road 885 Saltillo, MS 38866.
