Nan Barnes
Tupelo- Mary Nan Barnes, 82, died Saturday, April 1, 2023, at her home in the Auburn Community after a sudden illness. She was the first-born child of the late Robert Lonzo Bass and Mary Ruth Bass of Pontotoc County, on March 8, 1941.
Survivors include her husband, JM Barnes; daughter, Rita Holloway (Joe), both of Tupelo; four sisters, Jackie Russell of New Albany, Marilyn Helms, Kim Bounds (Robby), both of Pontotoc, and Debbie Robbins (Bud) of Tupelo; three brothers, Bubba Bass (Charlotte), Jerry Bass (Theresa), and Mike Bass (Tammy), all of Pontotoc; three sisters-in-law, Marge Daily (Joe) of Brandon, Joyce Hester of Hamilton, Alabama, and Melba Jean Tate of Pascagoula; one brother-in-law, Sonny Barnes of Verona; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Dr. Richard Russell of New Albany, and Buddy Helms of Pontotoc.
She was a graduate of Pontotoc High School, a long-time employee/supervisor at Hunter Sadler/Lanier Clothing Co., and a member of Auburn Baptist Church.
Nan was completely devoted to her cherished husband of 63 years, JM, and their daughter, Rita, who says they were more than mother and daughter, they were the best of friends. She was strong, kind-hearted, and had a special ability to bring peace and calm into difficult situations.
During their memorable years together, she and JM especially enjoyed boating and fishing, their flowers, and their little backyard fruit orchard. Nan liked making jams and jellies and sharing them with friends and family.
She never had grandchildren, so she filled that void with her and her daughter’s beloved cats. They meant so much to her and she always had a sweet kitty-cat story to tell.
She was known for her quick wit, joy, and laughter, often recalling and reminding her family of special memories that sometimes had been long forgotten. Now, to all who knew and loved her, Nan leaves many precious memories to hold on to.
