Birmingham Ridge - Murry Edward Sanders, 88, died Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at Baldwyn Nursing Facility after an extended illness. A Lee County native and longtime resident, he was born November 2, 1921 to Harvey and Flora A. Roberts Sanders. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the 464th Coastal Artillery Anti-Aircraft Batalion which was the first American ground based groups in the China-Burma-India theater in 1943. He was a farmer and also worked for Barber's Milk for many years. He was a Mason and a member of Birmingham Ridge Baptist Church. He always enjoyed tinkering on various projects.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Bobby Holland and Rev. Roger Smith officiating. Burial will be in McNeil Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, William Wimbs of Rayville, La. and Tommy Ray Sanders of Saltillo; two sisters, Louise Wimbs of California and Dale Wigginton of Saltillo; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha Evelyn Sanders; a daughter, Brenda Jo Sanders; and two brothers, Raymond Sanders and John Sanders.
Pallbearers will be Mark Sanders, Craig Sanders, Andrew Sanders, Bo Russell, Randy Wigginton, Tim Wigginton, Terry Wimbs, and Bobby Byrd.
Visitation will continue prior to service time at the Saltillo Chapel.
