Mildred Landers

MILDRED LANDERS Tupelo - Mildred "Millie" Schlater Landers, 87, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Cedars Healthcare Center. She was born March 12, 1925, in Greenwood to Randle B. and Mary Galloway Schlater. She was the youngest of four sisters. Millie, as her friends and family knew her, attended Stephens College in Missouri and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1947 where she met her husband, Joe Landers. They then relocated to Charlotte, NC, for about 3 1/2 years and moved to Tupelo in 1951 to be closer to her family, including her sister, Blewett Mitchell and her husband, Guy, who also lived there. She loved her family and friends dearly and was an avid reader. Her friends knew to expect her candid comments and quick wit. She was also an active member of First United Methodist Church in Tupelo, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. She also was a member of the Tupelo Junior Auxiliary and briefly taught school. Millie continued to "reach out" to those she loved and cared about and lived in Tupelo for the rest of her life. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Jim Curtiss and Rev. Lynn Mote officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include two sons, Bill Landers (Suzanne) of Memphis, Tennessee, and Edward Landers (Debbie) of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren, Kyle Landers of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Will and Andrew Landers both of Memphis, Tennessee; one great-grand daughter, Lucy Driggers of Rock Hill, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Landers; her parents; three sisters, Sara Elizabeth Appleton, Blewett Mitchell, and Frances Melton. Pallbearers will be Andrew J. Landers, William C. Landers, Floyd M. Melton, Jr., Guy W. Mitchell, III, Bennie C. Rogers, Jr., Floyd Milton, III, Moss Milton, Marshall Vaught and Stephen W. Vaught. Honorary pallbearers will be Coker Appleton, Susan Mitchell, Elizabeth Melton, Randy Rogers, Martha Vaught and Libba Wilson. Visitation will be Friday, January 18, 2013, at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral will also be at funeral home on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Sanctuary Hospice House, PO Box 2177, Tupelo, MS 38803, the First United Methodist Church, P.O.
