Tupelo - Mildred Nancy Baker, 82, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Community Hospice at Darlington Oaks after an extended illness. A native of Berry, Ala., she was born January 16, 1927 to Dude and Nancy Alma Smallwood Davis. She was a retired telephone operator, serving 30 years. She was the widow of W.O. Hightower Baker who preceded her in death March 1, 2009. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she loved and appreciated her Sunday School Class, the Faithful Followers. The special time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the joy of her life.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with her son, Ron Baker, officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include one daughter, Sherry Pearce (Donney) of the Auburn Community; one son, Ron Baker of Jerusalem, Israel; her brother, Dr. Glenn Davis of Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren, Jessica Turner (Matt) of Tupelo and McCain Pearce of Auburn; and two great-grandchildren, Rob Turner and Pearce Turner.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, W.O. Baker, and 11 brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Donney Pearce, Ron Baker, Matt Turner, and McCain Pearce.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
