DR. MIKE "TIMER" CURRIE Tupelo - Charles Michael Currie, M.D., 61, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the family's Eastport Marina lake house on Pickwick Lake. A Poplar Bluff, Missouri native, he was born May 22, 1953 to John David and Mary Emlyn Currie. Mike grew up in Orlando, Florida. He received his Bachelor of Science in physics at Florida Technological University, now University of Central Florida and his Masters in biomedical electrical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and went on to receive his Medical Degree from St. Louis University. Mike completed his residency in radiology and his fellowship in neuroradiology both at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He was also an assistant professor of neuroradiology at Vanderbilt. In 1987, he joined Radiology of Tupelo and in 2000, he founded Imaging Associates of North Mississippi which later became RPG Medical Imaging and he owned the Imaging Center on South Gloster Street. After moving to Tupelo, Mike played the organ for First Christian Church, where he served as a church elder. Later, Mike and his family joined Lawndale Presbyterian Church. For the past number of years, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mike was an active member of the Tupelo Rotary Club where he hosted the Rotary International exchange program for over 15 years and was also a Paul Harris Fellow. For the past eight years, Mike went on medical mission trips to Honduras and Ecuador with McFerrison Team and Global Outreach. He also was an adjunct volunteer for the Tree of Life Medical Clinic through his medical practice. Dr. Currie was involved in many professional and community organizations. He had served as president of Northeast Mississippi Medical Society, a member of American Medical Association, Mississippi Medical Association, South East Neuroradiological Society, board member of the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra , past president of the Oren Dunn City Museum board and former member of the Hillsboro Hounds Fox Hunt club in Nashville, where his daughter Jonelle is now a member. One of Mike's great passions in life was sailing. He and his family took a sixteen month sailing trip throughout the world and they lived six months in Turkey, three months in Greece, one month in Malta, three months in Spain and crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Mike was the captain of his own ship, Mahle with a US Coast Guard license. Mike was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed white water kayaking, water skiing, snow skiing, horseback riding, backpacking and astronomy. Mike is one of the few men that could say architecutal design is one of his hobbies. Mike and his wife, Vicki, restored Riverwood Mansion circa 1799 while living in Nashville. The home is one of four original plantation homes in Nashville and was the only home privately owned. Stained glass art work is something Mike also enjoyed. He built a 6 foot by 12 foot window for the church where he and Vicki met and married. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. David Langerfeld and Dr. Tim Fortner officiating. His son, John David, will give the eulogy. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Vicki Currie; five children, John David Currie, Jr. (Reba) of Kansas City, Missouri; George Wiles Currie of Baltimore, Maryland; Joseph Allen Currie (fianceé Caliopi Anderson) of Nashville; Jonelle-Marie Graham Currie of Nashville and Mae-Emlyn Ying-Guo Currie of Tupelo; his mother, Mary Shadle Currie of Orlando.; one brother, David Matthew Currie in Winter Park, Florida; one sister, Victoria Lynn Taylor (John) of Alpharetta, Georgia, and two grandchildren, Lillian Claire Currie and Michael Norman Currie both of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his father. Honorary pallbearers will be all the many people who touched his life. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church.
